CNC Gears

Machining involute gears from the DXF downloads with a router, mill, or waterjet.

The DXF download on every gear page is a closed polyline of the exact involute profile plus a bore circle, ready to import into CAM software (Fusion 360, VCarve, Mastercam) as a 2D profile toolpath.

For a routed or milled gear, pick a cutter diameter smaller than the smallest concave feature of the profile — the root fillet between teeth is usually the tightest radius. Coarser modules (1–2) tolerate a wider range of cutter sizes; module 0.3–0.5 gears may need a cutter under 1 mm to resolve the tooth gap cleanly.

Waterjet and plasma cutting follow the same DXF-import workflow as routing, with kerf compensation handled the same way as the laser-cutting notes above.
